Dividends Defined

Dividends are made out of a company's profit or retained earnings and the amount is set by a company's "dividend policy".

A company pays dividends on both its common and preferred shares.

Preferred shares have "preference" for dividend payments which means that dividends must be paid to preferred shareholders before any dividends are paid to common shareholders.

Dividends are payments that a company makes to its investors
